Oh boy. I still hear some of you asking “but HonEB, isn’t poker gambling?” Yes, it is a form of gambling but no more a form of gambling then day trading in the forex or stock market. One great thing about poker is that you are not just playing with solely luck. Poker is a game of probability, money management and sentiment analysis. Just like investing, no one can be 100% sure they have picked a winning play, but one can push the odds in their favour with different strategies and techniques. There is no way I can teach you everything you need to know but I can point out of stuff to take into consideration before you start playing with real money.
- Understand Probability- each poker hand are ranked in accordance to a system. The player with the highest ranked hand wins the pot. Probability plays into the game when players understand the odds or the likelihood that they have the highest hand and analyze the likelihood that the other players at the table may have a hand that will beat theirs. The fewer players playing for a pot, the higher the chances of winning for each player still left at the showdown.
- Money Management- This is the most important aspect of playing poker yet so many people take it for granted. You can’t play once you run out of chips. And once you are out of chips, there is no chance of winning a game. So you need to self preserve and have enough money and bet wisely in order to stay in the game as long as possible. The best plays know how to be patient and wear down the other players who are too greedy and want to risk big in order to win big. If you are patient, you can rule the game by watching the other players grasping at what little chips they have left to play. At that point, they become easy pickings. But let’s say you are a little aggressive and you don’t mind risking big to rattle the cages of the other, more conservative,e players. It’s important that you recognize when it’s time to go into self preservation mode. When investing, it’s usually recommended that you never risk more than 3-5% of your principle on any given investment. This rule can work just as well for poker. If you have $100 to play with then you shouldn’t risk more than $3-$5 for an entire round(betting taking place up till the last round of betting after the river card is presented). Money management can be tricky with “no limit” hold’em and especially with players who are wild and crazy with their betting. And with each hand you play, your strategy may change and so will the strategy of the other players. So it’s always important to keep an eye on your money while you are looking at taking away money from the other players at your table.
- Sentiment analysis- Analyzing the emotional atmosphere at the table once the dealer reveals the flop, turn and river cards. It’s the same type of analysis that takes place when studying the market fundamental reports and predicting how other investors will respond to the news. You are trying to look out for “tells” of other players while trying to disguise your own. Body language, tone of voice, betting habits, gestures… subtle cues that can be exploited and determine how a player may respond to a specific move you make. The longer a game runs for, the more worn out players become and the hardest it becomes to cover up “tells”. It becomes harder to analyze sentiment when we talk about playing online where all you have to go on are avatars, text comments and betting habits. But there is usually enough there for you to pick up on and still have a great game of wits.
There are many other stuff to think about and there are plenty of online resources to help you learn the basics and more advanced tips and tricks for being a great poker player. But I want you to keep in mind that people play differently when they are playing with real money. Aggressive players in “play money” games turn into little pussy cats when it’s their real dollars on the line. I personally tend to play “fixed limit” when I play with “play money” and I’m a little more comfortable playing “no limit” when real money is involved.
iIf you choose to play with real money, then always play with money you can afford to lose. For me, that’s $5.00. And once that money is gone, I am playing with “play money” to build my confidence, my strategy and my skills. And before I join a table, I take a moment to see how the players at the table are playing. I analyze the sentiment as best as I can. I’m a fairly conservative player and I tend to avoid tables full of aggressive players who are making wild bets and going “All- In” in almost every round.
On a final note, don’t take poker too seriously. Try and have some fun; even if you are losing your shirt. There are people who take it personally when they lose and there are those who get too cocky when they win big. It’s only a game and things change in an instant. One minute you are on top and the next moment you are out of the game. There are also people who can get “addicted” to gambling. And that is totally a behavioural thing. There are individuals “addicted” to games like World Of Warcraft and Second Life, believe it or not. When I say, “don’t take poker too seriously,” I truly mean it. Play no more than once or twice a week for no more than 3hours. Win or lose, walk away from the table after 3hours. Show some disapline. Don’t allow the game to control you.
